Historic Decisions to Be Made at Kanuga

The 2017 Annual Meeting of the AAPC Southeast Region, October 20-22, will set the course for the next phase in the life of our organization. The AAPCSE Coordinating Council is enthusiastically proposing the formation of a new professional organization to extend the mission of AAPC. We will ask members in attendance to discuss and vote on whether we continue its development and launch.

  • The new organization will provide education and be a community of formation for professionals who draw upon faith and spiritual wisdom in their professional practice.

  • The new organization will include pastoral counselors, professional psychotherapists, social workers, life coaches, ministers, spiritual directors, nurses, physicians, public health workers, students, and others.

  • The new organization would develop :in pastoral counseling, spiritually-integrated psychotherapy, pastoral care, spiritually-integrated healthcare practice, and more.

  • The new organization does not yet have a name. (In our working documents, we refer to it as “The ABC Organization.”) If our members vote to continue its development, the name would be determined over the next 12 months. The name will express the organization’s mission to serve this broad range of professionals.

This proposal represents 12 months of faithful work by the Coordinating Council. It reflects our faithful gathering around a central question: “What does the world need that we have resources to meet?” It includes our awareness of the deepening institutional and financial crisis facing AAPC. And it represents our hope to adapt the wisdom, values, and practices of AAPC to the realities of our current context.

You can read more about the vision for this new organization and more about the certification program we are proposing by clicking here. The Coordinating Council will share more documents and details at Kanuga. We see our proposal as “in clay, not stone,” and expect the conversation at Kanuga to help shape the work of the next 12 months.

This year’s meeting will be the most consequential meeting of our region since the founding of AAPC in 1963. We hope you will be with us.
